The Mogok region of Upper Myanmar is considered the primary source of Burmese sapphires, and has been mined for centuries. Sapphires from this region are known for their rich, velvety blue color and high clarity, often referred to as "Burmese blue" and is known for its unique and intense shade, making it highly desirable.

Sapphires from Burma can also come in different colors like pink, yellow, green, purple and even black. The mines of Mogok also produce other colors of sapphires like the padparadscha, which is a very rare color of sapphire that has a delicate pinkish-orange color.
